Sometimes kids have to share a room. If your house is on the smaller side sometimes sharing a room is inevitable. While in theory this may sound like a lot of trouble, in practice you can set up a shared room in a way that your children will still maintain their individuality and privacy. This is very important because children really need to have their own space as they are growing up to allow their individuality to cultivate.
For many children, the bedroom is their own personal space and an extension of their personality. That's why each child should be a part of the decorating process even in a shared room. Bring them shopping together for a few items to decorate the room. If they can't both agree on a theme, allow each one to decorate half of the room or divide up the decorative elements such as letting one choose the paint color and the other the wallpaper border. Get them involved as much as possible in creating their own space.

If you're really lucky, your children might get along famously and actually want to share a room. Even if that is the case, you should have a bit of foresight and realize that they might not always feel that way as they get older. Rather than waiting for things to come to a head, go ahead and set up some rules for the room now. Decide what time the lights will be turned off and who will be in charge of various room-related tasks. If there is a television or computer, decide how its use will be shared. These are things that you should think about beforehand to avoid big problems later on.
One big source of fighting when kids share a room is messiness. It may seem like a cliche but there is always one child who is significantly neater than the other. Make it clear that each child will be responsible for putting their things away when they are not in use and that clothes should never be left on the floor or a shared bed.
If possible, children should not share a bed. This can also lead to many problems because kids have different sleep styles and schedules. It is a far better idea to invest in two separate beds. Twin beds or daybeds are an ideal choice but a bunk bed will work if space is really low. If you have to use a bunk bed and both kids are adamant about sleeping on the top, you may have decide that they will alternative months or weeks sleeping in the top bunk to be fair to everyone. It's also a good idea to let each one choose their own bedspread.
