Starting out on your own, what an exciting adventure! That excitement is probably riddled with some anxiety too, right? That's okay, no one is born with this information, and there are countless people that have grown up in families where the home was not decorated like a museum, like mine was. So, for this to be a new concept to you, that's okay, we'll do this together.
Let's start with the basics: How much room do you have to work with? All off my estimations will be based on a one bedroom, one level apartment. If you are renting, most of the walls in your new place are probably white, which is okay, you can do many things to give a colorful and happy feel to any room. If you are really limited in space, using a daybed or futon, can be multi-tasking furnishings, which can be very helpful. If you are short on space and cash, there are places, such as garage sales, thrift stores, or items in classified ads, that you can find some good bargains at.

Once you have established your furniture needs and have acquired them, we need to discuss colors, fabrics, and textures. Starting off with earth tones will be your safest bet, you'll at least be laying a good foundation that you can always jazz up with brighter colors. Even if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, placing a large area rug in the living room that also has many of the same colors found in your furniture, you'll balance out the room, making the room appear cozier and colorful. Buying accent pillows for chairs or couches can be just the right punch of color, and add interesting texture to a room.
If you have decided to decorate with a theme, such as, oriental, modern, ect..., there are plenty of places out there that you can find some really awesome things. Again, thrift stores might just be a great way to go. There is always going to Mom, Dad, Aunts, or Uncles for their old furniture. Sometimes, starting out with used items can be great in a way, you appreciate the new stuff after having worked hard for it.
